Discover Solio
Solio Game Reserve is a private conservancy on the slopes of the Aberdare Range in central Kenya, and one of the continent's most celebrated conservation success stories. Founded as a dedicated rhino sanctuary in the 1970s when Kenya's black rhino population had been decimated by poaching, Solio has bred and successfully relocated over 100 rhinoceroses to parks and conservancies across Kenya. It is credited with saving the Kenyan black rhino from national extinction.
Today, Solio is home to one of the most accessible populations of both black and white rhinoceros in Africa. The open, rolling grassland of the conservancy, framed by the spectacular massif of Mount Kenya to the east and the Aberdares to the west, makes for outstanding rhino sightings in a setting of rare beauty. Vehicle numbers are strictly limited, meaning encounters here feel genuinely private. Beyond the rhino, Solio supports buffalo, hippo, leopard, zebra, and over 350 bird species in its grassland, wetland, and woodland habitats. The conservancy's Rhino Watch Lodge offers intimate accommodation with guided day and night game drives that showcase the rhino at distances most visitors find almost unbelievable. Solio is a destination for travellers who want a more exclusive, less-visited alternative to the mainstream Kenya safari circuit, with wildlife sightings that are extraordinary and a setting that is among the most beautiful in the country.
