Ol Pejeta

Ol Pejeta Conservancy in the foothills of Mount Kenya is one of the most significant wildlife conservation areas in Africa, a private conservancy of 90,000 acres that has become a global symbol of the fight to save species from extinction.

It is home to Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinoceroses on earth, living under 24-hour armed protection in a carefully managed enclosure on the conservancy. Their presence here, the end of an evolutionary line hundreds of thousands of years old, gives a visit to Ol Pejeta a sense of urgency and privilege unlike anywhere else.  Beyond this historic responsibility, Ol Pejeta holds the highest density of black rhino in East Africa and supports outstanding populations of the Big Five. The conservancy's open landscape, dense with yellow acacia and bisected by the Ewaso Ng'iro River, provides some of Kenya's most reliable and intimate wildlife encounters, particularly for lion, cheetah, and the vast herds of plains game that support them.  Ol Pejeta's private conservancy status allows activities unavailable in the national parks: night game drives that reveal the nocturnal hunters, guided bush walks that bring you face to face with the landscape at eye level, and visits to the chimpanzee sanctuary, one of the few places in East Africa where rescued chimpanzees live in a large, forested enclosure.  For travellers who want their safari to carry meaning beyond the spectacle, Ol Pejeta offers an experience that is both thrilling and deeply moving.
