Discover Malindi
Malindi is one of Kenya's oldest coastal towns, its history stretching back to the 14th-century Swahili trading networks that connected East Africa to the ancient commercial world of the Indian Ocean. In 1498, Vasco da Gama landed here on his way to India, and the Portuguese pillar he erected still stands on a headland above the sea, a quiet marker of one of the most consequential moments in the history of global exploration. Today, Malindi blends history, nature, and genuine coastal living in a way that the more resort-heavy destinations on the coast cannot match. The Malindi Marine National Park, gazetted in 1968 and the oldest marine park in Africa, protects coral reefs of extraordinary diversity just offshore. Snorkellers and divers encounter sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks in season, and vast communities of coral fish that make these waters among the richest in the western Indian Ocean.
On the beach, Malindi's wide, uncrowded sands offer a more relaxed and authentic coastal atmosphere than the busier resort beaches further south. The town itself is alive with Swahili food stalls, Italian coffee culture, fishing boats hauling in the morning catch, and the kind of unhurried local life that reminds travellers what a real place feels like. Malindi pairs beautifully with Tsavo, Amboseli, or any southern Kenya safari circuit, and rewards visitors who arrive with a little curiosity and the willingness to explore.
