The Great Migration in Kenya: Everything You Need to Know

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the natural world's most extraordinary events, and the Maasai Mara in Kenya is the site of its most dramatic act. Every year between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and Thomson's gazelle, cross the Mara River in search of fresh grazing, running a gauntlet of massive Nile crocodiles in one of nature's most savage and awe-inspiring displays.

 Understanding the Migration

The migration is not a single event but an ongoing, circular movement of animals through the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The herds begin calving on the southern Serengeti plains of Tanzania in January and February, then move northward through the year, following the rains and fresh grass. They typically enter the Maasai Mara between July and August, crossing the Mara River multiple times before the rains return them south between October and December.

The River Crossings

The river crossings are what most visitors come to witness. The wildebeest gather in their thousands at the river's edge, hesitating, retreating, surging forward in a collective motion that is part panic, part instinct, part raw survival. When the first animal commits and enters the water, the others follow in a roaring, churning mass. The crocodiles are waiting. The water turns white with hooves and brown with churned sediment. Some animals make it across. Some do not. It is brutal and magnificent in equal measure.

 When to Go

The best window for river crossing sightings in the Mara is between late July and October, though exact timing varies by year depending on rainfall patterns. The peak months are August and September. Even in July or October, sightings are possible.  What to Expect  A river crossing sighting is never guaranteed. The wildebeest move on their own schedule and no guide can predict exactly when a crossing will happen. A good guide knows the crossing points, reads the behaviour of the herds, and positions you for the best chance of being in the right place at the right time. Patience is as important as timing.  Bookings for the migration season fill up many months in advance. The Kama Shera Safaris team recommends booking at least 6 months ahead for July to October travel.
