Diani Beach: Your Complete Guide to Kenya's Most Beautiful Coastline

Diani Beach: Your Complete Guide to Kenya's Most Beautiful Coastline Thumbnail

After days of early mornings, dusty roads, and the exhilarating intensity of the African bush, Diani Beach arrives like a long exhale. It is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful beaches in Africa, and after a Kenya safari, it feels like the most natural conclusion to a journey that has already given you so much.

Getting to Diani

Diani Beach is located on Kenya's south coast, approximately 30 kilometres south of Mombasa. The easiest way to reach it from safari areas is via a scheduled domestic flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Ukunda Airstrip, a journey of approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively, Mombasa's Moi International Airport connects to Diani by a short road transfer. All Kama Shera Safaris packages that include Diani include the relevant domestic flight and airport transfers.

What to Do

The Indian Ocean here is warm, calm, and protected by a coral reef that creates a natural lagoon ideal for swimming at almost any tide.

Snorkelling over the reef is easily arranged through beach operators, and the variety of coral fish is extraordinary.

Kite surfing is Diani's most popular watersport, with the consistent south-east trade winds between June and September providing ideal conditions. Several certified schools operate on the beach for beginners and experienced riders alike.

The Colobus Trust near Diani runs guided tours of the coastal forest, where endangered Angolan colobus monkeys are studied and protected. This is a worthwhile half-day excursion that adds a wildlife dimension to the beach experience.

Shimba Hills National Reserve, a 20-minute drive from Diani, is one of Kenya's least-visited parks and home to the sable antelope, found almost nowhere else in Kenya, as well as elephant, leopard, buffalo, and excellent birdlife.

Where to Eat

Diani has a vibrant dining scene ranging from beach shacks serving fresh crab and grilled kingfish to upmarket restaurants with ocean views.

The seafood is exceptional and fresh.

Ask your hotel concierge to recommend a local fish market experience.

Practical Notes

Diani uses Kenya Shillings and US Dollars.

The beach strip has ATMs, pharmacies, and supermarkets.

Swimming is safest in the lagoon behind the reef.

Always heed local advice on currents, especially around the reef channels.
